Parapharyngeal Abscess

Parapharyngeal abscess (PPA) is a rare cause of deep space infection. It is caused by dental infection (30%), peritonsillar abscess (PTA), pharyngeal infections, mastoiditis, or parotitis and may spread rapidly and extend into the mediastinum and soft tissues of the neck, leading to airway obstruction, erosion into the carotid artery, suppurative mediastinitis, and sepsis.

Causes

  • Several aerobic organisms such as Streptococcus milleri, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus can cause Parapharyngeal Abscess.
  • Parapharyngeal Abscess may also occur from trauma, neck infections, and tumors.
  • Brain abscesses and liver abscesses are caused by the bacteria, amoeba, and fungi.
  • Lung abscesses may cause by normal airway flora, pneumonia germs, or tuberculosis.

Symptoms

  • Pain and swelling of the upper neck +++++
  • Fever ++++
  • Odynophagia ++++
  • Trismus +++
  • Sore throat
  • Torticollis (rare)
  • History of recent dental problem

Signs

  • Displacement of lateral pharyngeal wall toward the midline
  • Brawny or erythematous lateral neck swelling
  • Palpable, usually nonfluctuant tender mass below the angle of the mandible ++++
  • Stridor +++
  • Respiratory distress (rare)

Treatment

  • For the treatment of Parapharyngeal Abscess, you can use Homeopathic remedies that help to diminish abscess formation such as belladonna, silica, Hepar sulphuris, and calendula. Also, acupuncture may be recommended to help treat pain that may caused by an abscess.
  • Another treatment, If an abscess is directly beneath the skin, then it will be slowly working its way through the skin as it is more rapidly working its way elsewhere. Since chemicals work faster at higher temperatures, applications of hot compresses to the skin over the abscess will hasten the digestion of the skin and eventually result in its breaking down, releasing the pus spontaneously. This treatment is best reserved for smaller abscesses in relatively less dangerous areas of the body.
  • vitamins A and C, beta-carotene, zinc, liquid chlorophyll, and garlic are also useful as supportive daily nutrients to help clear up abscesses.
