Celebrex Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Celecoxib

Celebrex is in a class of drugs known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It works by reducing substances that may cause inflammation, pain, and fever in the body. Celecoxib may also be used to treat certain other conditions such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Celebrex may be used along with other treatments to decrease certain types of growth in the bowel or to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Celebrex Dosage

  • The recommended daily dose is 200 milligrams, taken as a single dose or in 100-milligram doses twice a day.
  • For the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis, the usual dose is 100 to 200 milligrams twice a day.
  • The usual starting dose is 400 milligrams, followed by an additional 200 milligrams if needed on the first day.

Uses of Celebrex

  • Celebrex is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and stiffness that may caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Celebrex is also used to reduce the number of adenomatous colorectal polyps in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), to treat acute pain, and also used to treat pain that are associated with menstruation.
  • Celebrex may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Celebrex

If you are using Celebrex, then discuss the side effects of Celebrex with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • swelling
  • diarrhea
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • runny nose
  • indigestion
  • rash
  • nausea
  • insomnia
  • respiratory infection
  • gas
  • sinus inflammation
  • dizziness
  • Back pain

Warnings and precautions before taking Celebrex:

  • If you have asthma, then you should use Celebrex with caution. It may also lead to attack, especially if you are also sensitive to aspirin.
  • If you are taking Celebrex, then you may feel dizziness or sleepiness. So do not perform any activity that require alertness such as drive or operate machinery.
  • Celebrex sometimes causes water retention, which can aggravate swelling, high blood pressure, and heart failure. You should use Celebrex with caution if you have any of these conditions.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Celebrex, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Celebrex. Discuss with your doctor before combining Celebrex with the following:

  • ACE-inhibitors
  • Blood thinning agents such as Coumadin
  • Fluconazole
  • Furosemide
  • Lithium
  • Thiazide diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide and Dyazide
Overdose

After taking Celebrex, if you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a Celebrex overdose include:

  • Breathing difficulties
  • coma
  • drowsiness
  • gastrointestinal bleeding
  • high blood pressure
  • kidney failure
  • nausea
  • sluggishness
  • stomach pain
