Cymbalta Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Duloxetine hydrochloride

Cymbalta is an antidepressant medication. Cymbalta capsules contain the active ingredient duloxetine hydrochloride, which is a type of antidepressant known as a serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). Cymbalta works by restoring the balance of two kinds of natural substances such as neurotransmitters known as serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, thereby improving mood and feelings of well-being.

Cymbalta Dosage

  • For the treatment of Major Depression, the total daily dose ranges from 40 milligrams to 60 milligrams.
  • For the treatment of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, the usual dose is 60 milligrams taken once daily.

Uses of Cymbalta

  • Cymbalta is used to treat major depressive disorder.
  • Cymbalta can help in fibromyalgia.

Side Effects of Cymbalta

If you are using Cymbalta, then discuss the side effects of Cymbalta with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Cymbalta. Side effects may include:

  • It may cause dry mouth
  • It may cause Headache
  • It may cause Insomnia
  • Decreased sex drive or difficulty achieving orgasm
  • Impotence or delayed ejaculation
  • Hot flushes
  • Taste disturbances
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Increase in blood pressure or heart rate
  • Cold hands or feet
  • It may cause Jaundice

Warnings and precautions before taking Cymbalta:

  • This medicine may make you feel drowsy or dizzy and so could reduce your ability to drive or operate machinery safely. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.
  • Cymbalta drug should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have severe kidney disease, glaucoma.
  • It is unknown if cymbalta medication passes into breast milk. Breast-feeding while taking this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Cymbalta, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Cymbalta. So discuss with your doctor before combining Cymbalta with the following:

  • Prozac, and Zoloft
  • Flecainide (Tambocor)
  • Fluvoxamine
  • Propafenone (Rythmol)
  • Quinidine
Overdose

After taking Cymbalta, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Cymbalta overdose may include:

  • seizures
  • drowsiness
  • hyperactivity
