Flomax Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Tamsulosin hydrochloride

Flomax is in a class of drugs known as alpha-adrenergic blockers. TAMSULOSIN (Flomax®) is used to treat enlargement of the prostate gland in men. It is not for use in women. It works by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder neck at the site of the obstruction. This improves urine flow and reduces BPH symptoms. This medication should not be used to treat high blood pressure.

Flomax Dosage

The usual starting dose of Flomax is 1 capsule (0.4 milligram) daily, half an hour following the same meal each day. Your doctor may also increase the dose to 2 capsules (0.8 milligram) once a day if needed.

Uses of Flomax

  • Flomax is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).
  • It is also used for other conditions those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Flomax

If you are using Flomax, then discuss the side effects of Flomax with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Flomax. Side effects may include:

  • infection
  • weakness
  • back pain
  • sore throat
  • chest pain
  • sleepiness
  • runny nose
  • Abnormal ejaculation
  • nausea
  • cough
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • sinus problems
  • headache

Warnings and precautions before taking Flomax:

  • Before taking tamsulosin, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or to other alpha-blockers such as alfuzosin, doxazosin or terazosin or if you have any other allergies.
  • If you are using Flomax, then it may cause some people to become dizzy. So do not perform any activities that require alertness such as drive and use machines or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are dizzy.
  • You should tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, before using this medication especially if you have prostate cancer, blood pressure problems.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Flomax, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Flomax. Discuss with your doctor before combining Flomax with the following:

  • Blood pressure drugs classified as alpha-blockers, such as Catapres
  • Cimetidine (Tagamet)
  • Warfarin (Coumadin)
Overdose

After taking Flomax, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Flomax overdose may include:

  • Dizziness
  • fainting
  • headache,
  • weakness
  • fast pulse
  • cold
  • clammy skin
  • loss of consciousness or coma
