Lescol Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Fluvastatin sodium

Fluvastatin is in a class of medications known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). FLUVASTATIN (Lescol®) blocks the body's ability to make cholesterol. Fluvastatin can help lower blood cholesterol for patients who are at risk of getting heart disease or a stroke. Fluvastatin is used together with lifestyle changes such as diet, weight-loss, exercise to reduce the amount of cholesterol such as a fat-like substance and certain other fatty substances in the blood.

Lescol Dosage

  • The usual starting dose is 20 to 40 milligrams per day and you should be taken as a single dose at bedtime.
  • At the 80-milligram level, the dosage will be split into two 40-milligram doses taken 2 times a day. If you have kidney disease, then you should be used doses over 40 milligrams with caution.

Uses of Lescol

  • Lescol is used to reduce the amounts of LDL (bad) cholesterol and total cholesterol in your blood.
  • Lescol also used to reduces the amounts of triglycerides (another type of fat) and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in your blood.
  • Lescol XL may also be used in certain patients to reduce the risk of blood vessel blockage.

Side Effects of Lescol

If you are using Lescol, then discuss the side effects of Lescol with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Lescol. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • upper respiratory infection
  • accidental injury
  • sore throat
  • back pain
  • nausea
  • muscle pain
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • nasal inflammation
  • flu-like symptoms
  • headache
  • indigestion

Warnings and precautions before taking Lescol:

  • Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history especially if you have heart disease, history of liver disease, kidney disease, underactive thyroid, diabetes, alcohol use.
  • You should also tell your doctor if you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking fluvastatin, then stop taking fluvastatin and call your doctor immediately. Because fluvastatin may harm the fetus.
  • Before stopping your medication, notify your doctor immediately if you have any any conditions such as major surgery, trauma, serious illness, very low blood pressure, uncontrolled seizures.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Lescol, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Lescol. So discuss with your doctor before combining Lescol with the following:

  • Cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral)
  • Diclofenac (Voltaren)
  • Erythromycin (E-Mycin, E.E.S.)
  • Glyburide (Micronase)
  • Niacin (Niaspan)
  • Omeprazole (Prilosec)
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • Rifampin (Rifadin)
Overdose

After taking Lescol, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Lescol overdose may include:

  • nausea
  • diarrhea
  • stomach distress
