Percocet Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Acetaminophen, Oxycodone hydrochloride

Oxycodone is in a class of drugs known as narcotic analgesics. This medication is a combination of a narcotic (oxycodone) and a non-narcotic (acetaminophen) used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Narcotic medicine work by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, and acetaminophen decreases the formation of prostaglandins, therefore reducing pain.

Percocet Dosage

The usual dose is one or two tablets every six hours. The total daily dose should not exceed 4 grams.

Uses of Percocet

  • Combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone are used to relieve moderate-to-severe pain.
  • It is also used for other conditions those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Percocet

If you are using Percocet, then discuss the side effects of Percocet with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Percocet. Side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • light-headedness
  • nausea
  • sedation
  • vomiting

Warnings and precautions before taking Percocet:

  • If you have any medical conditions, then you should not be used this medication. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have severe breathing problems, severe diarrhea.
  • If you are taking Percocet, then drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. So use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery.
  • You should tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to acetaminophen, codeine, oxycodone, sulfite, or any other drugs.
  • If you are taking prescription and nonprescription medications, then tell your doctor especially acetaminophen, antidepressants, medications for cough, cold, or allergies, other pain relievers, sedatives, sleeping pills, tranquilizers, and vitamins.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Percocet, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Percocet. So first consult to your doctor before combining Percocet medicine with the following drugs.

  • Antispasmodic drugs such as Cogentin, Bentyl, and Donnatal
  • Major tranquilizers such as Thorazine and Mellaril
  • Other narcotic painkillers such as Darvon and Demerol
  • Sedatives such as phenobarbital and Seconal
  • Tranquilizers such as Xanax and Valium
Overdose

After taking Percocet, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Percocet overdose may include:

  • sweating
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • nausea
  • loss of consciousness
  • small pupils
  • tiredness
  • coma
  • confusion
  • cold and clammy skin
  • vomiting
  • seizures
