Soriatane Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Acitretin

ACITRETIN (Soriatane®) is used to treat severe forms of psoriasis. It helps to reduce the redness, thickness, and scaling that occur with psoriasis. It may cause serious side effects such as birth defects if given to someone who is pregnant. Before using this medicine, consult with your doctor. This is to help make sure you understand the risk of birth defects and how to avoid getting pregnant. It works by allowing normal growth and development of the skin.

Soriatane Dosage

The usual dose is 25 to 50 milligrams once a day and you should be taken this medicine with your main meal.

Uses of Soriatane

  • Acitretin is used to treat severe psoriasis that has not responded to other treatments.
  • Acitretin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Soriatane

If you are using Soriatane, then discuss the side effects of Soriatane with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Soriatane. Side effects may include:

  • abnormal skin changes
  • blood clot
  • changes in blood sugar or cholesterol and triglyceride
  • depression
  • eye symptoms such as dryness, pain, redness, sensitivity
  • heart attack
  • joint pain
  • lip inflammation
  • liver disorders
  • muscle weakness
  • numbness or swelling of the hands or feet
  • inflammation of the pancreas
  • stroke

Warnings and precautions before taking Soriatane:

  • You should not be used this medication if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor if you have severe liver disease, severe kidney disease.
  • Before using acitretin, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or to other retinoids and if you have any other allergies.
  • Do not drink alcohol or take products that containing alcohol while using Soriatane. Because combining alcohol with Soriatane may causes a chemical change that makes it stay in your system longer.
  • Soriatane may also cause mental and behavioral changes. If you feel or develop symptoms of depression or aggression while taking Soriatane, or if you have thoughts of suicide or self-injury, then call the doctor immediately.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Soriatane, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Soriatane. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Soriatane with the following:

  • Birth control "mini-pills" containing progestin
  • Doxycyline (Doryx, Vibramycin)
  • Etretinate (Tegison)
  • Methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall)
  • Minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin)
  • Retinoids such as isotretinoin (Accutane)
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • Tetracycline (Achromycin V, Sumycin)
Overdose

After taking Soriatane, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Soriatane overdose may include:

  • nausea
