Tequin Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Gatifloxacin

GATIFLOXACIN (Tequin™) is an antibiotic in a group of drugs known as fluoroquinolones. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is used to treat bronchitis, kidney and other urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sinusitis, and certain sexually transmitted diseases. This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections such as common cold, flu.

Tequin Dosage

  • For the treatment of Acute Sinus Infections, the usual dose is 400 milligrams taken once a day for 10 days.
  • For the treatment of Bacterial Complications of Chronic Bronchitis, the usual dose is 400 milligrams once a day for 5 days.

Uses of Tequin

  • Tequin is used to treat various infections including bacterial infections of the lungs, sinuses, skin, and urinary tract.
  • It is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted diseases.

Side Effects of Tequin

If you are using Tequin, then discuss the side effects of Tequin with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Because only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Tequin. Side effects may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • vaginal inflammation
  • headache
  • vomiting
  • nausea
  • stomach pain

Warnings and precautions before taking Tequin:

  • Before using this medication, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially if you have brain disorders, diabetes, certain heart problems, kidney disease, mineral imbalance, seizures, family history of certain heart rhythm disorders.
  • If you are taking Tequin, then it may cause dizziness and light-headedness. So do not drive, operate machinery, or participate in activities that require mental alertness or coordination until you know how this medication affects you.
  • Before taking gatifloxacin, you should tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or to other quinolones such as ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, or moxifloxacin or if you have any other allergies.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Tequin, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Tequin. So discuss with your doctor before combining Tequin with the following:

  • Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
  • Vitamins containing iron, magnesium, or zinc
  • Digoxin (Lanoxin)
  • Probenecid
  • Insulin
  • Oral diabetes drugs such as Diabinese and Micronase
  • Iron
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Motrin and Naprosyn
Overdose

After taking Tequin, If you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of Tequin overdose may include:

  • decreased activity
  • slowed breathing
  • vomiting
  • tremors
