8 Common Injuries Treated by Physios

Neck

Neck injuries may occur due to a wide range of causes. Your injury may be due to muscular, joint or neural dysfunction. Often neck injuries are accompanied by cervical headaches and may cause referred pain to the upper arm or shoulder. Some of the causes of neck pain and injuries include:

  • Poor posture
  • Whiplash
  • Arthritis

Shoulder

The shallow joint socket of the shoulder makes this area less stable and more prone to injury. A proper functioning shoulder joint is essential for many daily activities. There are many conditions which can benefit from physiotherapy for shoulder pain, some of the most common include:

  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Dislocation
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Bursitis shoulder
  • Fracture
  • Arthritis

Shoulder physio Perth is often successful at treating shoulder pain and injury. Often the problems requiring rehabilitation are associated with weak and deconditioned muscles which can be normalised with proper assessment, diagnosis and shoulder physio treatment.

Muscle

Muscle injuries are a common source of muscle pain. Muscle strain is often due to overloading or excessively lengthening the muscle during sports or daily activities. This may also be referred to as a muscle tear or pulled muscle. The severity can vary from a mild pulled muscle to a complete muscle rupture. Treatment for muscle injuries depend on the severity. Your physiotherapist will assess your injury to determine the appropriate treatment.

Elbow and Arm

Elbow pain is most often due to one of three types of injuries; traumatic, degenerative or overuse injuries. Two very common types of injuries seen by physios include tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow. Usually these injuries affect the tendons around the elbow and are often due to poor technique, overuse or inadequate recovery. Physio treatment for elbow and arm injuries focus on stretching, strengthening and restoring normal function.

Lower Back

Lower back pain and lower back injuries are very common conditions treated by physio’s. Lower back injuries often occur due to poor posture, poor lifting techniques, deconditioning, chronic stiffness or trauma. Your physio will determine the cause of your lower back pain and plan an effective rehabilitation program to reduce symptoms and prevent their reoccurrence.

Knee

There are three main categories of knee injuries, including:

  • Degenerative – related to wear and tear, such as arthritis.
  • Traumatic – such as ligament, muscle, tendon or bone damage.
  • Overuse – causing inflammation or degeneration of the tendons.

Rehabilitation for knee injuries focuses on gradually restoring function, strength and range of motion. For severe injuries, surgery may be required.

Wrist and Hand

Wrist and hand injuries commonly occur due to falls, poor ergonomics at work or heavy lifting. Fractures are common after falls which may require bracing or splinting. Physiotherapy for wrist and hand injuries helps to regain strength, function and full range of motion.

Foot and Ankle

The most common ankle injury seen by physiotherapists is a sprained ankle. This injury can result in ligament, tendon and muscle tears. An ankle sprain can have significant effects on your range of motion, balance and muscle strength. An accurate diagnosis and treatment plan will help to restore strength, movement and balance while helping to prevent any future ankle injuries.
