Detrol Medication - Uses & Side Effects

Generic Name: Tolterodine tartrate

Tolterodine belongs to a class of drugs known as cholinergic receptor blockers. It is also used to treat disorders of the urinary bladder that affect urination. Detrol combats symptoms of overactive bladder such as frequent urination, urgency, and urge incontinence. The drug works by blocking the nerve impulses that prompt the bladder to contract.

Detrol Dosage

  • The usual starting dosage is 2 milligrams twice a day. Your doctor may decrease the dose to 1 milligram twice a day if the higher dose causes problems.
  • The usual dose is 1 milligram if you have liver problems.
  • If you are using Detrol LA, then the usual starting dosage is 4 milligrams taken once a day. A dose of 2 milligrams once daily is recommended for people with liver problems and those taking drugs that might interact.

Uses of Detrol

  • Detrol is used to treat overactive bladder with the symptoms of urinary frequency, urinary urgency, and urinary incontinence.
  • It is also used for other conditions those are listed in the medication guide.

Side Effects of Detrol

If you are using Detrol, then discuss the side effects of Detrol with your doctor and if you feel any develop or change in intensity, then tell your doctor immediately. Side effects may include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • blurred vision
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • dry eyes
  • dry mouth
  • fatigue
  • flu-like symptoms

Warnings and precautions before taking Detrol:

  • If you are using Detrol, then you may feel dizzy or sleepiness. So do not perform any activities that require more alertness such as drive and operate machinery.
  • You should tell your doctor your medical conditions including if you have allergies, difficulty with urination, stomach/intestinal disorders, glaucoma, liver problems, kidney problems.

Drug Interaction:- If you are taking certain drugs with Detrol, then it may be increased, decreased, or altered the effects of Detrol. Discuss with your doctor before combining Detrol with the following:

  • Clarithromycin (Biaxin)
  • Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
  • Erythromycin antibiotics such as Ery-Tab, Eryc, and PCE
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • Itraconazole (Sporanox)
  • Miconazole
  • Vinblastine
Overdose

After taking Detrol, if you feel that overdose is suspected, then contact with your doctor immediately. Symptoms of a Detrol overdose include:

  • restlessness
  • tremor
  • irritability
  • seizures
  • delirium
  • hallucinations
  • flushing
  • fever
  • nausea
